How to get a category B licence – step by step
What to arrange before you start driving and before your tests.
Driving permit and eyesight certificate
Apply for a group 1 driving permit and arrange an eyesight certificate before you start practising. Application information from Transportstyrelsen (Swedish).
Start practising
You may start practising in a passenger car without a trailer from age 16 with a valid permit. Private practice also requires an approved supervisor. The introductory-course requirement was removed on 1 August 2026. Supervisor requirements (Swedish).
Combine driving and theory
Start at your current level, practise towards clear goals and connect the rules to your driving. Our introductory lesson is 60 minutes for SEK 600.
Complete both parts of risk training
Both parts must be completed and valid before the theory and driving tests. Risk training remains valid until you obtain your licence, for a maximum of five years. Official risk-training information (Swedish).
Pass the theory and driving tests
For a category B licence you must, among other requirements, be 18 and pass the theory and driving tests. Full eligibility requirements (Swedish) and test information from Trafikverket (Swedish).
Automatic or manual?
A driving test in an automatic car normally gives you restriction 78, which only allows you to drive automatic cars. Removing this restriction requires a new driving test in a manual car. Read about restriction 78 (Swedish).
